Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood is losing a familiar retail anchor. Sport Chek is preparing to close its long-running West Broadway store, ending nearly two decades of business at the site. The closure marks another shift along the busy Broadway Corridor, where construction and changing retail patterns continue to reshape the area.

A Longtime Mount Pleasant Retailer Says Goodbye

The store sits at 18 West Broadway, right at the southwest corner of Ontario Street and West Broadway. It opened roughly twenty years ago, shortly after the five-storey mixed-use building was completed in 2004. The building takes up most of the block and includes 78 residential units above the retail space.

Sport Chek occupies just under 20,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space. The store also comes with 36 dedicated vehicle parking stalls in the underground parkade. Even so, this location has generally ranked among the chain’s quieter stores over the years.

Word of the closure isn’t new. Commercial real estate firm Marcus & Millichap began marketing the unit for lease last year. At the time, the firm suggested the space could be available for occupancy as early as January 2026. The listing remains active today, even as the store nears its final days.

According to Marcus & Millichap, the current zoning allows for several other uses. Cafes, bakeries, bistros, pharmacies, and general retail are all permitted under the existing rules. There’s also room to divide the space into smaller retail units for multiple tenants.

Closing Sale Draws Crowds as Discounts Grow

Closing sales began earlier this month, and the discounts have only increased since then. Starting Thursday, July 23, 2026, markdowns rose to 50 percent off the lowest marked price across all merchandise. Shoppers have taken notice, and the store has stayed busy as a result.

On Saturday, July 25, a long line formed outside the store as bargain hunters waited to get in. Despite the steady turnout, a significant amount of merchandise still remained on the shelves. The scene reflects just how much interest a closing sale can generate, even at a smaller location.

Once the West Broadway store shuts its doors, shoppers will need to head elsewhere for their Sport Chek fix. The nearest alternatives include the Robson Street flagship store downtown and the Marine Drive location in South Vancouver. Park Royal mall in West Vancouver and Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby round out the nearby options.

New Retail Arrives Along the Broadway Corridor

While Sport Chek is stepping back, other retailers are moving in nearby. Last month, a 19,000-square-foot Loblaws City Market opened directly above the future South Granville SkyTrain station. The store sits inside The Storeys tower at West Broadway and Granville Street, and it has become the area’s newest anchor tenant.

Meanwhile, Sobeys is converting a former Toys ‘R’ Us space into a FreshCo discount grocery store. That location sits just three blocks east of the upcoming South Granville Station. Together, these openings show that grocery retail is filling gaps left by departing chains.

Redevelopment is also reshaping the block just west of the Sport Chek site. In 2024, Vancouver City Council approved plans to redevelop the former MEC store at 130 West Broadway. The project will bring rental housing, childcare space, and new retail to the area.

Construction has added extra pressure on local businesses in recent months. Earlier this year, a four-month closure disrupted traffic on East Broadway, just one block from the store, for work on the future Mount Pleasant Station. This week, a six-month closure began on West Broadway between Alberta and Cambie Streets for further subway construction.

Once complete, Mount Pleasant Station will open with the Broadway Subway extension in late 2027. Its entrance will sit just two blocks east of the soon-to-be-vacant Sport Chek site. For now, though, the neighbourhood is watching one more retail chapter come to a close, even as new investment continues to arrive nearby.
