Vancouver Air Quality Drops Sharply, Ranks Among World's Worst
Vancouver air quality has taken a dramatic turn for the worse this week, and residents are noticing the difference in the skies above the city. What felt like a slightly hazy afternoon has quickly turned into one of the more concerning air quality events the city has faced this year. If the outdoors have looked a little dull or smoky lately, that is not an illusion.
According to IQAir, the platform that tracks and ranks air quality in major cities around the world, Vancouver is climbing the leaderboard for the wrong reasons. The city is now sitting near the top of the list for the worst air quality among global cities, a ranking it rarely reaches.
How Bad Has Vancouver’s Air Quality Become?
IQAir updates its readings every hour, and as of 9 a.m., Vancouver ranked 22nd worldwide for worst air quality, carrying an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 76. That number alone places Vancouver at the top of the list among Canadian cities that IQAir tracks. In other words, no other city in the country currently has it worse.
For context, the worst-ranked city on IQAir’s global list was Kuwait, which recorded an AQI of 208. Vancouver’s numbers remain far below that figure, yet the shift still marks a significant and sudden change from the city’s usual air quality standards.
IQAir identifies PM2.5, or fine particulate matter, as the main pollutant currently affecting Vancouver’s skies. These tiny particles are small enough to enter the lungs and bloodstream, which is why health officials pay close attention whenever levels rise.
Neighbourhood-level data paints an even clearer picture of the problem. As of 9 a.m., the West End recorded an AQI of 107, a level that IQAir classifies as “unhealthy for sensitive groups.” That reading stands well above the city-wide average and highlights how conditions can vary block by block.
Fortunately, IQAir’s hourly forecast suggests some relief is on the way. The platform expects conditions across the West End and the wider region to gradually improve as the day progresses, though the timeline for full recovery remains uncertain.
What Is Causing the Sudden Decline?
Local air quality tools tell a similarly troubling story. The Metro Vancouver Regional District maintains its own Air Quality Health Index, which sorts regions into low, medium, high, or very high risk categories. As of 9:20 a.m. on July 22, the Eastern Fraser Valley fell into the high risk category, while Metro Vancouver itself remained at low risk.
Meanwhile, Southwest Metro Vancouver landed somewhere in between, facing a medium risk classification. This kind of regional variation shows how pollution and smoke do not spread evenly, and why checking neighbourhood-specific data matters.
By around 11:22 a.m., Metro Vancouver issued a yellow air quality warning, urging residents across a long list of communities to limit outdoor activity. The advisory applied to Vancouver, Burnaby, New West, North Shore, Richmond, Delta, Tsawwassen, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Surrey, White Rock, and Langley. Officials specifically recommended cutting back on both the duration and intensity of time spent outside.
Explaining the cause, the district stated, “Ground-level ozone (smog) is expected to reach elevated levels in eastern parts of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley this afternoon due to a combination of hot and sunny weather, local emissions, and wildfire smoke.” That combination of heat, sunlight, and smoke has proven especially potent this week.
The biggest driver behind this shift appears to be the recent increase in wildfires burning across British Columbia. As fire activity intensifies across the province, smoke has begun drifting into the Metro Vancouver region, pushing pollutant levels upward in a short period of time.
The change stands out even more when compared to recent history. Just last week, Vancouver actually ranked among the top 10 cleanest cities in the world according to IQAir. That reversal, from clean air to a top-25 worst ranking, happened in a matter of days rather than weeks.
Health Risks and What Residents Should Know
While the situation is far from ideal, it has not reached the extremes seen elsewhere in Canada in recent memory. Ontario residents, for example, have dealt with far worse air quality episodes in recent weeks. Vancouver’s current numbers also fall short of the most severe wildfire smoke events the province itself has experienced in past years.
Even so, health experts generally advise caution whenever PM2.5 levels rise and ground-level ozone builds up. Fine particulate matter can irritate the eyes, throat, and lungs, and it tends to affect sensitive groups the most. That includes older adults, young children, pregnant individuals, and anyone with existing respiratory or heart conditions.
For most people, monitoring local air quality apps and limiting strenuous outdoor activity during peak smoke hours can help reduce exposure. Staying indoors with windows closed, using air filtration where available, and avoiding heavy exercise outside are common recommendations during elevated AQI periods. Because conditions can shift by neighbourhood, checking hourly updates from IQAir or the region’s own Air Quality Health Index remains the most reliable way to plan a day outdoors.
