Gander 9/11 Commemoration: Town Defends Decision to Invite Ambassador Hoekstra

The Gander 9/11 commemoration has become the center of an unexpected controversy this week. The Town of Gander, N.L., says its invitation to U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra for the 25th anniversary ceremony was simply protocol, not a political statement. Town officials insist the event honors people, not politics.

Gander’s council issued a public statement on Friday to clarify its position. The town wants residents and critics alike to understand why Hoekstra received an invitation despite his recent controversial remarks. Meanwhile, the backlash online has grown louder as the ceremony date approaches.

Why the Gander 9/11 Commemoration Includes Ambassador Hoekstra

Hoekstra is one of several dignitaries attending Gander’s tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Consequently, his name appears on the same guest list as other diplomatic representatives invited under standard government protocol. The town says this list was assembled long before recent political tensions escalated.

News of his attendance quickly triggered strong reactions across social media. In addition, the satirical outlet The Beaverton published a piece titled “Come from Away sequel will see Newfoundlanders put the friggin’ boots to Pete Hoekstra.” The headline referenced the hit musical Come From Away, which tells the story of Gander’s kindness toward stranded travelers after 9/11.

Come From Away dramatizes how residents fed, clothed, and cared for more than 6,500 air passengers stuck in the small Newfoundland town. Thirty-eight planes made emergency landings in Gander once U.S. airspace closed on September 11, 2001. Hijackers had just struck the World Trade Center in New York, killing nearly 3,000 people that day.

Given this history, many locals feel a deep personal connection to the anniversary. Therefore, any political controversy surrounding the event feels especially sensitive to the community. The town, however, wants to keep that emotional legacy separate from ongoing diplomatic friction.

Reactions to the Ambassador’s Invitation Amid U.S.-Canada Tensions

Hoekstra has stirred controversy in recent months by criticizing Canada’s “elbows up” campaign against U.S. tariffs. He has also expressed irritation with Canadians’ reactions to President Donald Trump’s remarks about making Canada the 51st state. As a result, tens of thousands of Canadians have signed a petition demanding his removal as ambassador.

His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday. Nonetheless, Hoekstra addressed the invitation earlier in the week through an emailed statement. He said he was attending “not just on behalf of those who were stranded, but for an entire nation that remains moved by Gander’s generosity.”

He added, “I look forward to meeting many of those who opened their hearts and homes and honouring the enduring bond built that week.” These comments suggest the ambassador views his attendance as a tribute to Gander’s history rather than a political gesture. Still, critics argue his recent statements make his presence at the ceremony difficult to separate from politics.

The Town’s Message Ahead of the Gander 9/11 Commemoration

Gander’s town council acknowledged the frustration many Canadians feel toward ongoing tensions with the United States. Even so, officials asked residents to look beyond those differences for this particular occasion. “There are times when we will disagree. There are also times when we have to recognize that something is bigger than those differences,” the release stated.

“For Gander, September 11 is one of those times,” the statement continued. The council emphasized that inviting foreign governments and diplomats followed established procedure, not a personal endorsement of any individual. Furthermore, the town clarified that similar invitations extend to representatives regardless of current political climates.

The council did not ask anyone to change their opinions about U.S. policy or the ambassador himself. Instead, they requested that public attention remain on the anniversary’s true purpose. “We are not asking anyone to change how they feel or what they believe,” the release said.

The statement continued: “We are asking that, for this occasion, the focus remain on the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the people forever affected by September 11, and the humanity that brought people together here 25 years ago.” This message reinforces Gander’s central goal: honoring victims and survivors above all else. Ultimately, the town hopes the ceremony will highlight compassion rather than controversy.

Looking Ahead to the 25th Anniversary

As the 25th anniversary approaches, Gander continues preparing for a ceremony rooted in remembrance. The event will likely draw significant national attention given the current political backdrop. Similarly, the world will be watching how the town balances diplomacy with community sentiment.

Whether the controversy fades before the ceremony remains uncertain. However, Gander’s leadership appears committed to keeping the focus on victims, survivors, and the extraordinary hospitality shown 25 years ago. In the end, the town’s message is clear: this moment belongs to history, not politics.
