However, nobody has confirmed whether the two leaders will meet on the sidelines.<\/p>

The trip continues Carney’s effort to bring Canada closer to Europe and strengthen ties with countries around the world. Senior government officials briefed reporters before the departure. They said Carney will meet with world leaders and business leaders during his visit.<\/p>

Carney Pushes for UN Reform at the General Assembly<\/h3>

Some world leaders, like Trump, are moving away from multilateralism. Carney plans to respond by focusing on reform of the United Nations<\/em> and on the selection of its next secretary-general. Antonio Guterres is in his second and final five-year term, which ends at the close of this year.<\/p>

Trump has also criticized the organization directly. During a nearly one-hour speech at the General Assembly in 2025, the teleprompter stopped working, yet he kept railing against the UN. He openly questioned its effectiveness and argued that it failed to serve U.S. interests.<\/p>

\u201cWhat is the purpose of the United Nations? The U.N. has such tremendous potential … but it\u2019s not even coming close to living up to that potential,\u201d Trump said. Later, when meeting face-to-face with Guterres, Trump told the Secretary-General, \u201cour country is behind the United Nations 100 per cent\u201d.<\/p>

Advancing a Two-State Solution in the Middle East<\/h3>

Carney will also spend time on the Middle East. On Tuesday, he is expected to co-host an event with France and the United Kingdom on the two-state solution<\/strong><\/em>. The event comes one year after the three countries recognized an independent Palestinian state at the General Assembly.<\/p>

Last year, Canada recognized the state of Palestine as part of a coordinated international effort. Canadian officials said the goal was to \u201cpreserve the viability of a two-state solution.\u201d That support followed a commitment from the Palestinian Authority to advance governance reforms, pursue demilitarization and hold local elections.<\/p>

Canadian officials told reporters that the meetings give nations a chance to show continued support for the two-state solution. Furthermore, participants will examine the implementation of key priorities and the progress made so far.<\/p>
