Malehya Brooks-Murray, mother of missing Nova Scotia siblings Jack and Lilly Sullivan, has spoken publicly for the first time in over a year, saying she has done everything the RCMP asked of her while she waits for answers.<\/em><\/p>

For more than 15 months, Malehya Brooks-Murray has lived in a state of constant waiting. She marks her children’s milestones not with celebrations, but with a growing pile of sealed cards and wrapped gifts. These gifts are for a homecoming that has not yet happened.<\/p>

Her children, Jack and Lilly Sullivan<\/strong>, were four and six years old when they vanished from the small community of Lansdowne, N.S., in May 2025. Their disappearance sparked one of the largest search efforts in the province’s history. However, the case remains unsolved, and few details have been made public.<\/p>

In an exclusive interview with CBC News and The Globe and Mail<\/em>, Brooks-Murray addressed the speculation surrounding her family for the first time. She said she had nothing to do with her children’s disappearance and does not believe she is a suspect. Additionally, she still holds on to hope that Jack and Lilly are alive.<\/p>

Why the Mother of Jack and Lilly Sullivan Stayed Silent<\/h3>

Brooks-Murray explained that her long public silence was not a personal choice. Instead, it came directly from RCMP instructions during the ongoing investigation.<\/p>

“I just did whatever they told me to do because I didn’t want to jeopardize the case in any way. And I also wasn’t ready because I’m continuing to go through extreme trauma and even this is extremely hard for me,” she said.<\/p>

She also pushed back against public criticism she has faced for staying out of the spotlight. “I don’t feel I owe people anything. If anything, I’m owed answers and to have my children back to me,” she added.<\/p>

Brooks-Murray, 28, recalled the last time she saw her daughter Lilly. It was the morning of May 2, 2025, when Lilly poked her head into the bedroom she shared with her then-partner, Daniel Martell, and their one-year-old daughter.<\/p>

At the time, she heard Jack and Lilly playing together in another room. Consequently, she drifted back to sleep, unaware it would be the last ordinary moment before everything changed.<\/p>

Martell is not the biological father of Jack and Lilly. Still, the family of five had been living together in their Pictou County home since August 2023, according to Brooks-Murray.<\/p>

When she woke up to silence, she and Martell began searching the property immediately. They called 911 at 10:01 a.m., setting off a massive emergency response across the region.<\/p>

The search that followed was massive in scale. In total, 1,700 search-and-rescue personnel logged more than 12,000 cumulative hours across 8.5 square kilometres of dense, rugged woods.<\/p>

The day after the children vanished, tensions escalated between Brooks-Murray’s family and Martell’s family. As a result, Brooks-Murray left the scene abruptly, at the direction of both police and her own relatives.<\/p>

“The police had said that we should go and told my family privately to take me out of there and I was in too much state of shock that I just wanted to be with my family and my daughter,” she said.<\/p>

That day marked the end of her relationship with Martell, and she never returned to the family’s mobile home afterward. When asked about the household dynamics before May 2, or why she never went back, she declined to elaborate further.<\/p>

Martell did not respond to a request for comment on the case.<\/p>

Meanwhile, the RCMP’s Major Crime Unit continues to lead the investigation. Officials maintain there is currently no evidence pointing to a crime, even though investigators have executed search warrants and conducted multiple polygraph examinations.<\/p>

Brooks-Murray herself has completed two polygraph tests, along with several extensive rounds of questioning. Based on these interactions, she believes she is not considered a suspect by investigators.<\/p>

“I’m at the point now where I can’t worry about what people think of me because people who are close and know me [know] \u2026 I would never do anything to my children and that I love them very much,” she said firmly.<\/p>

Although the wait for answers has been excruciating, Brooks-Murray said she still trusts that the RCMP is doing everything it can. She continues to hold onto hope that her children are alive somewhere.<\/p>

“If they see me on TV, they might recognize me and maybe somehow they’ll be brought back home,” she said. “I have dreams about them coming home and I believe it.”<\/p>

Living With Uncertainty: A Mother’s Ongoing Wait<\/h3>

Brooks-Murray believes the children were likely taken, though she admits she does not know why. She has also said she believes an Amber Alert should have been issued on the day of their disappearance.<\/p>

Officers reportedly told her at the scene that one would be issued, but it never was. Authorities have since said the case did not meet the required threshold, since investigators had no suspect or vehicle information to share publicly.<\/p>

Instead, officials issued a vulnerable persons alert across two counties. Investigators have repeatedly stated there is no evidence to support an abduction theory in the case.<\/p>

The RCMP declined an interview request for this story. However, spokesperson Allison Gerrard said the case has “demanded sustained effort from specialized teams engaged in detailed police work.”<\/p>

She added that many investigative steps and updates cannot be shared publicly while the case remains open. Still, an RCMP liaison officer stays in regular contact with the family’s designated representative.<\/p>

For Brooks-Murray, though, these updates offer little comfort. “I continue to get the same update over and over and I keep asking for new avenues and they keep saying we’re working on it and I just don’t feel like that’s enough,” she said.<\/p>

“I feel like I deserve more than that and I deserve answers on where they’re at and I need them at home,” she added.<\/p>

To cope with the ongoing uncertainty, Brooks-Murray keeps herself busy. She creates art, makes keychains bearing her children’s faces, and helps search for other missing people as a way of giving back.<\/p>

On Canada Day, she walked in a parade in Westville, N.S. She carried a homemade placard to draw attention to the case, wearing a sweatshirt with the word “mommy” printed across it.<\/p>

Looking ahead, Brooks-Murray also plans to return to school in September to train as an addictions counsellor. This marks a new chapter as she tries to rebuild a sense of normalcy.<\/p>

Every night, she sleeps with her children’s favourite stuffed animals: a white unicorn with a silk pink bow, and a green-and-blue brachiosaurus. She has even tracked down brand-new versions of both toys for when they return home.<\/p>

“Your children have a particular scent that you never forget. It’s just something that, especially when they’re born and you’re holding them in your arms, it always stays with you,” Brooks-Murray said.<\/p>
